The pupils were attending an Assessment Day as the culmination of a collaborative project between the Darwin Centre and Milford Haven Port Authority’s Community Initiative, within MHPA’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.
Following a series of recent investigative research Field Trips, organised by the Darwin Centre and led by Sid Howells of the Countryside Council for Wales, local junior school pupils completed project work to be assessed by British Association for the Advancement of Science BA CREST Awards. The Assessment Day was a BA supported event, as part of National Science and Engineering Week.
During the Assessment Day, the schools presented their projects, with each school having focussed upon a different aspect of the Waterway, its history and use.
Haverfordwest VC examined the geological development of the Waterway and impact of differing weather conditions.
 St Francis RC examined shipping figures, charting the gross tonnage over the last ten years. The pupils also looked at the shift in average sizes of leisure craft.
 Pembroke Dock Community School focussed on eight locations and researched their history and geographical placement along the Waterway.
 Pupils participated in workshops run by the Darwin Centre, Keep Wales Tidy and the Pembrokeshire Activity Centre.
 The Assessment Day and collaborative programme was funded through Milford Haven Port Authority’s Community Initiative.

 Claire Palmer, Milford Haven Port Authority’s Community Officer said of the programme “I am amazed at how much has captured the imaginations of the young people and how much information they have learnt and retained about the Waterway. This certainly was a worthwhile collaboration and one which we hope will become an annual event, benefiting school children around the County.”
