Marine Futures

Darwin staff will visit your school and dazzle your pupils with scientific experiments and workshops.  Marine Futures events are available at a subsidised cost.  For availability please contact us.

Microscope Workshop: An introduction to Microscopy, which allows the children the freedom to use microscopes and investigate their world on a new and exciting level.  We use classroom items, creepy crawlies and Plankton samples from our lab as subjects to view. The Plankton allows us to talk about food chains, green plants and habitats.

Electrical Workshop: The pupils have hands on experience of making electrical circuits (series and parallel) and using lamps and switches.  We talk about dynamos, solar panels and demonstrate a working scale model of a steam engine.  This can tie into electricity production, renewable energy and sustainability.

Oil Spill Workshop: We recreate an acute oil spill using cooking oil and cocoa powder.  The pupils will be encouraged to think about the effects of spilled oil on the coast, it’s plant and animals.  We will talk about how we can prevent oil pollution and the methods use to try to clean up an oil spill.  Oil formation and its array of uses are brought to the pupils attention.

Climate Change Workshop: An action packed presentation on Climate Change allows pupils to find out more about the science behind climate change, global warming, sea level rise and the green house effect.  Separate the myths from the facts of climate change and study the science in a carefully delivered manner.

We can develop alternative workshops and make adjustments to suit the needs of each class.
Workshops are 75 minutes long for classes up to 30 pupils.  Discounts are available for multiple workshops of the same subject on the same day.
